Shredded Pastry Dessert (Kadayif)
One of the popular good Turkish homemade food is Kadayif desert and here's a national food of Turkey Kadayif (Shredded Pastry Dessert) recipe! This delightful dessert combines crunchy pastry with a sweet syrup and a hint of nuts. 🍰🌿
Ingredients
Kadayif Pastry 🍂
- 500 grams shredded kadayif (available at Middle Eastern or Turkish grocery stores)
- 200 grams unsalted butter, melted
- 1.5 cups crushed walnuts or pistachios (optional, for filling)
For the Syrup
- 2.5 cups sugar
- 2.5 cups water
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
Instructions
Prepare the Syrup:🍬🍋
- In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
- Once it boils, reduce the heat and simmer for about 10-12 minutes. Add the lemon juice, stir, and let it simmer for another 2 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let the syrup cool to room temperature.
Prepare the Kadayif Pastry: 🍂
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Separate and fluff the shredded kadayif strands so they're loose and easy to work with.
- Pour the melted butter over the kadayif, mixing it well with your hands to coat all strands evenly.
Assemble:
- In a greased baking dish, press half of the buttered kadayif evenly along the bottom.
- Sprinkle the crushed nuts over this layer, if using.
- Cover with the remaining kadayif, pressing gently to create an even layer.
Bake: ⏲️🍂
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-40 minutes or until golden brown on top.
Add the Syrup:
- Once the kadayif is golden and crisp, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup evenly over the hot pastry. The hot kadayif will absorb the syrup better, giving it the perfect texture.🍯
Cool and Serve:
- Let the dessert cool completely to allow the syrup to soak in fully.
- Cut into squares or diamonds and serve, garnishing with extra crushed nuts if desired.
